Jim Gates has been a licensed California architect for over 35 years. His body of work includes a variety of projects including high density mixed use multifamily, single family residential, commercial, office, and institutional projects.
As a founding partner of Public Architecture in San Diego, he led a dedicated team of Architects and craftsmen that earned a reputation for design excellence, innovation and flexible thinking with a broad range of projects including custom homes, tenant improvements, mixed use urban in-fill, university centers and Public Art installations.
Jim is considered a thoughtful practitioner with a high degree of technical knowledge that is put to service to deliver beautiful and economical work. He is glad to take on whatever role is necessary to see a project's higher goals achieved, whether it is as the lead Architect, forming and pouring concrete, crafting custom fixtures, convincing governing authorities or skeptical neighbors to believe in and support the project or mentoring younger architects and craftsmen to achieve great results.
He has a fondness for intimate details and story telling that often calls for early collaboration with public artists, designers, landscape architects and local craftsmen.
